Ever since I first saw the preview to this movie a few months back I have in fact been quite curious!! For me, it was one of those previews where even though I know it's impossible I was curious to see about this chap...Benjamin Button.
I try to post movie reviews without posting any spoilers. I don't like accidentally happening upon a spoiler so I don't like to post any. With that said, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is about a boy/man born in 1918 as an old man, chalk full of "old people" problems and ages backwards. He goes through life like any other person would experiences jobs, travel, people, life, and death except he learns about it moving from an old man to a young boy. The interesting thing that actually took my brain a little while to wrap around was at the beginning of his life, when he's physically an old man his mind is quite young and innocent. As he grows more and more youthful, his mind is maturing and an understanding overcomes him. An integral part of the movie is the love story between Benjamin and Daisy. He meets Daisy when he's physically 70-something years old and she's just 6. As time goes on both live their lives separately but keep in contact through letters and post cards.
One of the best parts of the movie, at least in my opinion, is the huge about of true historical events that are depicted. Growing up I was never a huge history fan, but now as I get older AND history is presented in much more interesting formats I find that I enjoy learning about historical people, places, and events.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button seems to have just lukewarm reviews, but I rather enjoyed it. The movie is timed nearly 3 hours long, but I didn't feel like I was sitting there for 3 hours, the time passed by pretty quickly. I was always engrossed into what he was doing, how he was changing, and the people he met. I'd definitely recommend this movie and may even by the DVD when it comes out!
Taei and I RARELY ever get to go to the movies together, but this week he's available and after a long holiday season with constant guests I snatched up the chance to go on a date with my hubby! It wasn't a traditional date in the sense of dinner and a movie...rather we had to pick up some groceries and saw a matinee, but it's still time with my hubby and I'll take it!! LoL!
I've heard awesome things about the movie Gran Torino and since it was at a perfect time and not overly gorey or girly it became our date night movie.
In brief summary, Gran Torino is about an old, widowed, Korean war vet whose neighborhood has gone from traditional all American to gang infested, multi immigrant ghetto. Through a series of unexpected events he ends up becoming the patriarch to a Hmong family and mentor to the only son in this family. I don't want to post any spoilers but I'll say it was a really good movie. Clint Eastwood's portrayal of Walt Kowalski is pretty convincing. At the beginning of the movie he comes off as such a racist bigot, but by the end he's warmed up to this Hmong family and even though he's still throwing out racial slurs, you can't help but get the sense of endearment. I'd highly recommend seeing Gran Torino!
Wow!! It's been awhile since I seen a movie!! What's up with that?? LoL!! So my Girls Day in the City blog was gettin' a bit long and I thought the move review should be it's own blog anyways so I split the two! After our shave ice and about an hour of just chatting, Tiff, Ester, and I decided to see a movie (Kris had to work that night, so she didn't come with us). Because of the timing we ended up choosing the movie Role Models...but did that work out!!
This movie is so FREAKIN' hilarious!! Without ruining it with a spoiler, it's about 2 guys who are kinda goof balls being court ordered to partcipate in a "big brother" type programs for children. They don't want to be there and neither do the two boys they get assigned to. It's crazy funny as they work through their 150 hours of community service!
As a warning mom's and dad's...there's a lot of cursing in this movie. I wasn't even expecting that and there are at least 2 boob shots, so even though there are kids in this movie, I wouldn't consider it a kid movie.
Two of my favorite characters in this movie are first, Paul Rudd, he's acted in Knocked Up, The Object of My Affection, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and a grip of other movies. He even co-wrote Role Models. He's one of my FAVORITE guys...he's hilarious and goofy! One of my favorites from him was in Clueless!! LoL!!
My second favorite from this movie is Christopher Mintz-Plasse, better known as "McLovin" from Superbad! This boy is so cute and hilarious!!
I definitely plan on buying this DVD when it comes out! It's so funny!! But remember not a kid movie!
Well you already know its Tuesday and what that means! I can't wait until Regal opens up in Kapolei! By this time next year Kapolei will have a Costco, Target, Regal Theatres, and loads of other shops and restaurants!!! Yipee!! I also hope that the new Regal will have the comfy chairs that you can pull up the armrest if you don't want it! But in anycase, we headed out to Pearl City Highlands Regal to catch a flick! Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist looked so cute by it's previews that we decided on that one!
Okay so I'm probably one of the few 20-something to NOT watch Superbad, Knocked Up, or Juno. I don't know why, but none of the movies really appealed to me. I did attempt to watch Knocked Up at Tiff's house, but we were busy prepping for Taei's 30th Disco Party, I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention. But after watching Nick & Nora's I might want to go back and watch those other movies!
This movie was simple and cute. The story has probably been done before, but the cast and characters of this movie set Nick & Nora in a different type of playing field. Nick, played by Michael Cera, is so cute and his delivery of lines is a crack up! It feels like you're watching yourself and group of friends on the big screen. Obviously by the title you know that music plays a huge part of the movie. The soundtrack sounded pretty cool and it's actually music I wouldn't normally listen to so that kind of exposure, at least for/to me, is cool too! I liked this movie and will probably buy the DVD when it comes out!
You guessed it today is Movie Tuesdays!! It was sorta last minute so I had eaten dinner, but being the cow that I am I still got me a $1 hot dog...honestly, what's wrong with me? LoL!! Tiff and I decided to watch Nights in Rodanthe...being nice I didn't want to subject Taei to a chick flick when we get a chance to go out!
However, I did see one man in the theatre, granted he was about 70 years old he was still there. But this is a good movie for guys to watch, but obviously ladies it's a chick flick! Staring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, Nights in Rodanthe is a story about an unhappy man and an unhappy woman who are both struggling with failed marriages and their relationship with their children. They end being the only two staying at (an awesome looking) Beach House Inn on the shores of North Carolina. Together they discover what their weaknesses are and what exactly they're struggling with.
Let me say it was AWESOME! I should've read the book first, but I still plan on reading it anyways. Love and heartbreak abound in this movie. Again, I'm not one to post spoilers, but all I have to say is YOU'LL NEVER GUESS (unless you read the book) THE ENDING. The movie really moved me, not quite to tears cuz I'm not that kind of emotional girly girl, but it made me reflect on Taei. I started to think of all the reasons I fell in love with him, the night I knew I'd marry him (even though we weren't even discussing marriage or anything close to it...but that story is for another blog, probably one of them slow days I don't know what to blog about! LoL!!), and how our relationship is now. I can say that because of this movie I appreciate my hubby!!
Just go and see the movie...and guys it's a good one for you too. Just suck it up and take your wife/girlfriend!! You never know you might get lucky...lol!! Just kidding, but seriously, this is definitely a movie to watch!
So my sister-in-law, Jolena had to make an emergency last-minute trip to Guam for her grandfathers funeral. She decided to take both her kids with her, a 9-year old son and 6-month old daughter. This left my brother-in-law (her husband, obviously!), Peter home all alone! Just before leaving she called a bunch of us and left text messages asking us to "check in" on Peter every once in awhile. I think it's funny cuz I figured he'd be so consumed with uninterrupted quality time with his XBOX 360 or Wii, but apparently he says, "You can only play so much video games..." You have to know these people to understand why I think that statement is such an IRONY! But in any case Tiffany called him up the other day and asked if he wanted to do dinner and a movie...it might seem a bit weird for the 3 of us, but we've spent the better part of 11 years hangin' out with the same group and so missing a husband or wife here or there rarely phases us...we're all family!
In any case we headed up to Central Oahu and had a korean food dinner and watched the movie Righteous Kill.
I've read the reviews and some are pretty harsh on De Niro and Pacino, but I thought it was an okay movie. I didn't really know what the movie was about and I guess that helped because I didn't have much expectations. The most important thing to consider, in my opinion, is that it isn't an action packed, blood bath kind of movie. Even though the word "kill" is in the title, there are killings, but most of it is sort of a mental mystery. There is a twist at the end that Tiffany and Peter were surprised, but I think if you are really paying attention to the storyline you'll figure it out. About 30-45 minutes before the end of the movie I figured it out. It was okay, I think if you're already a De Niro or Pacino fan you'll like this movie. But if not, don't watch it, in fact don't even by the DVD, wait for it to come out on TV...lol!!
Speaking of Pacino...seriously, this dude has AGED! I just got into the whole Godfather Trilogy about 6 or 7 years ago...I LOVE those movies and seriously consider Godfather II one of the best movies of all time. Al Pacino was SUPER HOT in those movies...okay, maybe part of it is the power he holds, but seriously. I knew who Al Pacino was, but just couldn't put the two faces together...yikes!
Don't get me wrong...I'm not downing aging, but seriously, Robert De Niro is only 3 years younger, but he looks about 10 or 15 years better!! Ahhh...I'll just hold on to Michael Corleone...lol!
The other night Tiffany and I had nothin' to do so we decided to take in a movie. I recently joined the Regal Crown Club and am trying to rack up enough points to start earning movie tickets! It's a cool program that's free and is basically like the Maika'i card at Foodland. You sign up online, they mail you a card, when you get it you hand it to the cashier or scan it at the automated ticket machine to earn points for ticket purchases. You can also earn points at the concession! I think I got about 72 points and you need 84 before you get a free movie ticket...something like that. Well Tuesdays is free small popcorn for Regal Club members and $1 hot dogs! What a deal!! So we headed out, neither of us had eaten dinner yet, but we picked up drinks and snacks at Walmart first. But can you believe that we got a large popcorn (upgrade for just a $1) and 4 hot dogs for just $5!! When was the last time you spent that little at a movie concession!! LoL!! So since it was just the two of us girlies we decided to watch The Women....
Just by watching the previews I knew that I didn't want to subject Taei to this movie. It's a chick flick in the purest sense of the term, I don't think there was a male in the entire movie! It's not one of those romantic comedies. Of course I still enjoyed it and parts where really funny (a couple of ladies in front of us, found it hysterical!! Slappin' the knee and the whole bit!!), but in the end it was about women and their relationships. Some reviews were saying that its a chick friend flick better than the Sex and the City movie, but to me there was no comparison, I didn't think they were the same and I liked them both for different reasons! Of course who doesn't like a movie with Meg Ryan? She's SOOO cute!! LoL!!
Of course I don't want to be a spoiler for people planning on watching the movie, so if you and your sister or girlfriend are lookin' for a girls night, this is probably the movie for you folks! Let the guys stay home and play video games!!
The past couple of weeks have been STRESSFUL! I had a big exam for work which I took and failed the first time! It sucks, but it is was it is! I wanted to re-take it and quick...so I scheduled my re-take 5 days later. Maybe not the smartest move on my part, but I figured I was so close (71 when 75 was passing), that all I needed to do was brush up on the areas that gave me problems! Well I did just that and I PASSED!! I don't know how much better I did, cuz when you pass it just says that you passed!! But at this point...who cares! I passed and thats a HUGE MONKEY off my back!!
So today I just wanted to relax and thats what we did! We started with breakfast at Big City Diner...no pictures though!! That place was PACKED with people watching the Little League Championship Game!! Shout out to the Waipio Team for their victory!! Congrats boys!!
Afterwards we decided to watch a movie. Taei has been dying to see Tropic Thunder and since I've watched more movies than him and I normally get to choose the movie I gave in.
Okay first off...parents this IS NOT a kid movie. It's got bad language, some (funny) sexual contenct, and its actually a bit raunchy! It was humorous...and Robert Downey Jr's role is so wrong, but thats part of why its funny! I'd put it up there with all the other parody movies, like Not Another Teen Movie or that Scary Movie franchise. Honestly, I probably wouldn't watch this movie again...its funny though, but I'll wait until they show it on the Comedy Channel or something! So I've been watching alot of movies lately and at the suggestion of one of my work buddies I decided to join the Regal Crown Club. It's sort of like the Foodland Maikai Program, you earn points that will start to add up for free movie tickets. Plus with your membership you'll get discounts and freebies at the theatres. So Tuesdays are free popcorn and $1 hot dogs at Regal...so that just might be our new movie night. We've been dying to watch Hancock since we first saw the previews, so off we went...
It was pretty good. I had heard a review prior to watching the movie, saying that the writers should have gone into greater depth on one (probably the main) aspect of the movie. I have to agree that more background would've made for a better movie. But Will Smith is entertaining to watch no matter what...I don't think he's made a movie I didn't enjoy. So I'd recommend this movie, but I'd also suggest to watch it as matinee.
Another reason I like going to the movies is the previews before. They had a cute new Disney movie coming out around Thanksgiving about a dog, named Bolt, who plays a movie superhero, but doesn't realize he isn't really a superhero. Something to take the kids to...
Okay so if you were anywhere pass Kapolei yesterday around 4'ish...you were stuck on this side of the island!! I had big plans for my Tuesday...I was gonna work out (which I did!!), hit up Costco, Ross, and even Walmart. But besides the rain all of my plans came to a EEEEEEERRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKK....screeching halt due to some sort of flipped over truck going townbound!! Bummers!! Well Tiff was already at my house...I had nothing to eat and so we headed on down to Kapolei. We ended up at Outback Steakhouse. I've only been to Outback maybe 2 other times and both times I wasn't impressed. Maybe cuz I have to be in the mood for steak, but they just aren't on the top of mind for me! I ordered the Grilled Pork Chops, 18.99. No picture, but it was two, pretty good sized pork chops rubbed with some kind of spice and had smokiness to it. The first one was nice and moist, the second one was DRY...and I should've taken it home to Taei. It came with garlic mashed potatoes, but I opted for steamed veggies instead and cinnamin apples, which I don't understand. Tiff go the BBQ Mix, $21.99.
It's a special right now. Which as you can see comes with a small rack of ribs, bbq chicken, 2 coconut shrimp, corn, french green beans, and some kind of marmalade which I didn't like (my meal had it too??). Tiff opted to sub out the green beans for a baked potato. Instead of an appetizer I got a bowl of clam chowder and Tiff got a salad. The clam chowder had a little kick to it, but it was good. Overall, still not that impressed and in fact I thought they were VERY overpriced! I probably won't got back. The cheapest dinner entree was $14.99 for chicken. If the food blew me away the price wouldn't matter as much, but since its pricey AND the food was just ok for me...ehhh!
So our intent was to have dinner and check out the traffic situation. Well even at 7 pm it was still backed up and there was no way we were gettin' out of Kapolei! So we decided to watch a movie! I know...I can't believe it myself! This is totally unlike my usual cheap self...3 movies within a week! cRaZy!! But we ended up watching...
Let me just say...this movie was FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! The effects were crazy!! The plot was okay...kind of typical and you can see the "twist" coming, but the fight scenes were crazy! I loved the sarcastic humor in the script...and I'll say it, I'm a confident women...Angelina Jolie is SUPER HOTT! If I were a guy or a lesbian I'd wanna hook up with her too. So she's one actress I totally understand why guys oggle! LoL!! Funny enough she's not really the main character in the movie, yet the movie posters and even the trailers made it seem like she was. But the movie was SO good...I walked out of it feelin' completely content that we got our moneys worth! Plus I wanna take Taei to see it...it was that good! I'll give it 5 stars!! Outta 5...I rank out of 5, just for future reference!! LoL!!
One last thing...my mom sent me this video clip!! It's hilarious!!
You gotta hear it too, so turn up your volume!
